While communicating with a few other collectors pursuing the 1991 Orioles Crown set we came to a conclusion, our collections will never be complete. Aside from the stubborn Albie Pearson and Hank Foiles refusing to sign this specific set, there were a few Orioles to pass away before the printing of the cards.
I knew there were a few but didn't think the final count would come to 36. With these statistics my goal of collecting signed versions of all 501 cards is impossible. I am not scrapping the whole idea, just tweaking the numbers. And no I didn't work for Enron. The total cards possible in the set is actually 465.
Here is a list of the Orioles who passed before they were commemorated in this set.

Also, the Ron Jackson card in the set is an error (wrong Ron Jackson pictured on the front). The correct Ron Jackson is black and played in the 70's and 80's. The Ron Jackson pictured on the card is white and is much older. The stats are all for the correct Ron Jackson though.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy a good theme collection. Good luck on your quest. Any more on why those two won't sign the Crown cards by chance? I am just curious about those types of things.
ReplyDeleteFoiles won't sign because he never gave the company permission to use him in the set, and because he was never paid for being in the set.
ReplyDeletePearson just doesn't sign anything anymore. Although I think someone has a private signing with him coming up next month. I'll be taking advantage of that if it goes through.
When the set was produced in 1991 it was produced by the team and Crown gas stations, not the MLBPA or alumni. Foiles will under no circumstances sign his card and Don Larsen will only sign if $7 is paid.
